Animal Birth Control

Street dog population has become one of the most significant problems in cities. Dogs, since time immemorial, have co-existed with man. With rapid urbanization, however, it has become increasingly difficult for animals to survive and co-exist with human. Competition for food has led to more human and dog conflicts, resulting numerous dog bites and cases of Rabies in cities.

Mass sterilization and vaccination has been found to be the most effective and humane form of controlling stray dog numbers and control rabies by yearly vaccinating these dogs with Anti Rabies Vaccine. This view has been endorsed by WHO, Animal Welfare Board of India, World Society for Protection of Animals and the Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Sterilization involves the surgical removal of both the testis in male dogs and ovaries and uterus in female dogs. Hence they are unable to reproduce and are prevented from multiplying.

Apart from conducting ABC surgeries in Bangalore since ….. Sarvodaya Sevabhavi Samstha has participated in ABC programmes in many municipalities. In Mysore, Sarvodaya Sevabhavi Samstha has worked in coordination with Reaching Out To Animals and PfA, Mysore where we were able to sterilize almost 60% of the street dog population. To continue on with the ABC programme in Mysore, we have stationed our well- trained Veterinary Doctor and 8 Animal Handlers with ROTA and PfA, Mysore. We have conducted ABC programmes in places like Madikeri, Mundgod and Pune on the request of animal lovers. We have also conducted ABC projects successfully in places like Udupi, Mandya, Hassan, Bhadrawati and Chintamani.

How ABC - ARV programme works

We catch dogs from our designated zones, using Butterfly Net method (which is considered the most humane method) and transport them to the sterilization unit. There they are operated upon by experienced Veterinarians with latest surgical technique using key-hole surgery and maintaining high aseptic condition. The surgery involves minimum trauma to the dogs, resulting in quick healing of the surgical wound and faster recovery. The dogs are released in the same environment from Where they were caught only after the Veterinarian’s examination.

The dogs are released in the same environment from where they were caught, only after ensuring that the dog is fit for release following the Veterinarian’s examination. While sterilization eventually stabilizes the street dog population to manageable proportions, anti-rabies vaccination (ARV) helps control the spread of rabies.

Treatments and Rescues

Treatment is our basic service to all the needy animals and specially the neglected and uncared by the society. These animals needs our help and medical attention, so when someone calls us on seeing a accident case where the animal is injured we try to give on spot treatment to these animals and if more medical care is needed are brought to our shelter. The rescued animal is provided with extensive medical care as per the need of the distressed animals.

Adoption of Pups

This is the most important step to control the stray dog population and bringing our Indian dog at par to the pedigreed dogs. Pups which are found on streets or brought by someone or after recovery from illness are dewormed, Vaccinated and then put for adoption through our volunteers and online social networks. In association of "Lets Live together" we have been able to organize adoption camps for the Indian dogs.

Adoption of Adult Abandoned Dogs

The dogs which are left by owners in the process of shifting to other cities or abroad are becoming a big issue in cities like Bangalore. This intern cause a big nuisance to the society as they are not able to feed for themselves and are mostly engaged with fights with local dogs on the street. Some people take breed dogs as pet but once they get old, diseased or crippled are left on the streets to die. Such cases are referred to the NGOs to catch theses dogs and to euthanize them which is not the solution. So we try to convince these owners as to not to leave them but to keep them as they had been a good companion to them. Such dogs are very difficult to get them adopted but an effort has been put by us to make a difference.

Awareness Programmes

We conduct awareness programmes to educate the general public about the coexistence of animals with humans. We advocate about adopting the Indian dog as their pet which is more immunized and resistant to diseases compared to the pedigreed dogs. Give presentations in Schools regarding the dos and don’ts to children so as to avoid conflicts of children with animals. Pamphlets are distributed regarding the control of zoonotic diseases which are spread through pet animals. These zoonotic diseases unknowingly are bringing bad name to the pet animals as the owners are not aware about the proper control measures. Public is educated through gathering, pamphlets, public meetings, society meetings, etc. In these gatherings the importance of proper immunization, guidelines to keep a pet animal and have proper vaccination schedule is advised.

Mobile Surgery Unit

A successful trial run of our mobile surgery unit was done in Ananth Nagar, Phase I Electonic City. Marie, a French lady residing in this area wanted to sterilize and vaccinate the Community Dogs in her locality. Total of 33 dogs were sterilized and Vaccinated against Rabies. Special thanks to Ravi Narayan, Jayshree, Levin N Dasan, Megha Chinchewadi, Reena Puri, Nevina New Avatar, Poornima Harish, Dr. Parviz Piran, Tushar Roy, Padmini Roy, Marie, Savitha Nagabhushan, Lokesh, Bhanu Kumar and many more animal lovers/ well wishers/ supporters who had supported directly and indirectly to make this project a grand success.

Technical Support

Sarvodaya have assisted other Animal Welfare Organizations like PFA Mysore, PFA Hubli, Tibetan Volunteers for Animals, Resq of Pune, and SPCA Udgir by sending expert teams for their ABC projects. Sarvodaya was able to provide technical assistance to these Animal Welfare Organization and the local Veterinarians were also updated with our latest technique of key-hole surgery. On request, we have even sent our ground staff to teach the way of catching to their staff as our animal handlers are well versed in catching dogs using butterfly net.

Sarvodaya also partners ABC INDIA which is a pan-India organization, whose goal is to improve standards of ABC programs across the country. Sarvodaya has assisted in the Rajamundry (Andhara Pradesh) vaccination drive in where 1000 dogs were vaccinated in a span of one week. We also assisted in ABC INDIA’s pilot ABC Project in Hubli where we helped coordinate the sterilization of 2000 dogs in three months and assisted in ABC surgeries.

Camps

Another Christmas gift! We are honored to have the first animal welfare team ever come to the ancient city of Sarnath bearing all the hardships of a long train ride to give the first education effort.

Here are the preschool children and the cute puppy our vet Dr Akshay Prakash trustee/ vet surgeon SARVODAYA SEVABHAVI SAMSTHA of BANGALORE is holding is named “Barfi”. (An Indian sweet).

Education is vital but the trip was foremost an assessment for the first ABC (animal birth control) camp. It’s an absolute necessity to stop the endless cycle of breeding and potential rabies.
